During debate over transgender participation in school sports, Talarico counted chromosome variations as separate sexes and told colleagues that modern science recognizes more than two. He was widely mocked for the framing.
“In fact, there are six.”
The official Texas House journal, page 4214, record vote 1686, lists Talarico voting nay on advancing Senate Bill 14 to third reading. The bill prohibited specified transition surgeries, puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for patients under 18, with statutory exceptions.
Talarico offered Amendment 11 to Senate Bill 14, exempting health providers to the extent that compliance with the prohibitions conflicted with the Hippocratic oath. It failed 56 to 82, record vote 1677, journal pages 4203 and 4204.
In floor debate on Senate Bill 14, Talarico defended hormonal treatment for minors with severe gender dysphoria and described the legislation in the strongest terms available to him.

Running statewide in June 2026, Talarico stated that he opposes gender reassignment surgery for minors. In May 2023, he voted nay on advancing Senate Bill 14 to third reading. That bill covered specified surgeries, puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, so the vote does not establish support for every procedure it restricted. He also authored an amendment creating a Hippocratic-oath exception.

Conservative assessment
His statewide message stresses opposition to surgery for minors. His legislative record shows opposition to the bill restricting those surgeries alongside hormonal treatment, plus an effort to create an exception.
In an interview with the Texas Freedom Network, Talarico urged Christians to challenge the Religious Right on LGBTQ policy and described transgender children in explicitly theological language.

Asked on the Superbloom podcast what he loved beyond family and friends, Talarico pointed to transgender children advocating at the Texas Capitol and called their presence inspiring. Fox News later criticized his phrasing.
The Washington Free Beacon published promotional material and photographs showing that Talarico spoke at the TaylorPRIDE festival, an event that also featured an 11-year-old drag performer billed as Kween Kee Kee.
